SGF receives Tripartite Committee report on minimum wage

Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), has officially received the report of the 37-member Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage.

In a statement issued by Segun Imohiosen, the Director of Information and Public Relations in the Office of the SGF, it was confirmed that the report would soon be forwarded to President Bola Tinubu.

The Tripartite Committee, chaired by Alhaji Bukar Goni Aji, was inaugurated by President Tinubu on January 30, as mandated by the Minimum Wage Act, 2019.

Its primary task was to recommend a new national minimum wage for workers in both the public and private sectors of Nigeria.

According to Imohiosen, the committee successfully concluded its assignment and submitted its report to the SGF on Monday, June 10, 2024.

He further stated, “A formal presentation of the Report will be made to Mr. President for appropriate action when the leadership of the Organised Labour as well as representatives of Government and Organised Private Sector, who are presently in Geneva, Switzerland for the ongoing International Labour Organisation (ILO) Conference, return to the country.”

The President is expected to thoroughly review the report and seek a middle ground, especially considering the proposal of a N62,000 minimum wage by the committee, which had faced rejection by organized labour.
