Second Niger Bridge Vandalism: Umahi condemns act, labels it ruthless sabotage

Minister of Works, David Umahi, has issued a stern condemnation of the recent vandalism of the Second Niger Bridge, describing it as a ruthless and cowardly act of sabotage against the nation’s progress.

The incident involved the destruction of expansion joints crucial to the bridge’s structural integrity, sparking outrage across the country.

Despite the presence of private security personnel deployed by the Federal Ministry of Works, the perpetrators managed to carry out their destructive mission.

Expressing deep concern, Umahi underscored the significance of the Second Niger Bridge in fostering socio-economic development and enhancing connectivity between states.

He described the vandalism as not just an attack on infrastructure, but a direct hit on the country’s developmental strides.

“These acts are not only cowardly but also a direct sabotage of the nation’s efforts to improve infrastructure and connectivity,” Umahi stated.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by the minister’s Special Adviser on Media, Orji Uchenna Orji, titled “Vandalization of Structures on the 2nd Niger Bridge: Ruthless and Cowardly Sabotage,” Umahi highlighted the critical role the bridge plays in national development and connectivity. He emphasized the need for enhanced security measures to protect such vital infrastructure and called for the apprehension and prosecution of the vandals.

The statement read partly, “The Honourable Minister of Works, His Excellency, Sen Engr. Dr Nweze David Umahi, FNSE, FNATE, CON, receives a report on the activities of vandals on the superstructure of the 2nd Niger Bridge, particularly the cruel and cowardly incident of destruction of the expansion joints used to absorb the thermal expansions of the 2nd Niger Bridge.

“He expresses deep shock that reports of vandalism are still being recorded despite the presence of the private security outfit deployed by the Federal Ministry of Works to man the area.

“It is saddening that a human being with the right senses could destroy such a critical and strategic treasure that catalyses Nigeria’s socio-economic advancement.”

The 2nd Niger Bridge is a landmark project aimed at easing traffic congestion and boosting economic activities by providing an alternative route between the southeastern and southwestern regions of Nigeria.

The recent vandalism not only undermines these goals but also represents a significant financial setback for the nation.
