Reps pass bill to return to old National Anthem

The House of Representatives has voted to reinstate the old National Anthem, marking a nostalgic return to tradition.

Sponsored by the House Leader, Julius Ihonvbere, the bill swiftly cleared its second and third readings during Thursday’s plenary session in Abuja.

The decision to revert to the former anthem reflects a desire to reconnect with Nigeria’s cultural heritage and evoke a sense of unity and pride among citizens.

The anthem, with its stirring lyrics and timeless melody, holds a special place in the hearts of many Nigerians, symbolizing the nation’s journey and aspirations.

Following its passage in the House of Representatives, the bill will now proceed to the Senate for concurrence before reaching the desk of the president for final approval.

The move to restore the old National Anthem underscores the importance of preserving national identity and upholding cherished traditions.

As the bill progresses through the legislative channels, Nigerians await with anticipation the potential return of a familiar anthem that encapsulates the spirit of the nation.

Below is the old National Anthem:

Nigeria we hail thee
Our own dear native land
Though tribes and tongue may differ
In brotherhood we stand
Nigerians all, are proud to serve
Our sovereign Motherland.

Our flag shall be a symbol
That truth and justice reign
In peace or battle honour’d,
And this we count as gain,
To hand on to our children
A banner without stain.

O God of all creation
Grant this our one request.
Help us to build a nation
Where no man is oppressed
And so with peace and plenty
Nigeria may be blessed.
Anthem
