Olu Obafemi Addresses Funding Challenges in Nigerian Universities at UNIJOS ASUU Heroes’ Day

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the University of Jos (UNIJOS) is set to commemorate its Heroes’ Day with a public lecture featuring esteemed poet, playwright, and author Prof. Olu Obafemi.

The event, scheduled for Friday, March 22, 2024, at 10 am, will take place at Unity Hall, ASUU Secretariat in Naraguta Campus of UNIJOS.

Prof. Olu Obafemi will deliver a thought-provoking lecture titled “Government’s Commitment Towards The Funding Of Public Universities In Nigeria: The Past, The Present, and The Future.”

With his wealth of experience and expertise, Obafemi is expected to shed light on the challenges facing public universities in Nigeria and propose viable solutions for sustainable funding.

Obafemi, a former President of the Nigerian Academy of Letters (2016-2018), is renowned for his groundbreaking contributions to African literature and drama. His pioneering work in revolutionary aesthetics and his advocacy for social justice have earned him widespread acclaim in academic circles.

According to Prof. Jeff Doki, the Convener of the event and Head of the Department of English at UNIJOS, the lecture will be graced by distinguished personalities including UNIJOS Vice Chancellor, Prof. Tanko Ishaya, and ASUU chairman, Dr. Jurbe Molwus. The event will be chaired by Prof. Monday Mangvwat, former Vice Chancellor of the University.

In a statement, Prof. Doki highlighted Obafemi’s unwavering commitment to academic excellence and social activism. He recounted Obafemi’s advocacy for the fulfillment of agreements between ASUU and the Federal Government, as well as his vocal stance on the need for increased funding for education in Nigeria.

Prof. Doki described Obafemi as a “Comrade Professor” dedicated to the emancipation of the poor and the promotion of social justice. He emphasized Obafemi’s role as an “organic intellectual,” advocating for the rights of marginalized communities and challenging exploitative systems.

The upcoming lecture promises to be a platform for insightful discussions on the future of higher education in Nigeria and the imperative of sustainable funding for public universities.
