Peter Obi weighs potential PDP-LP merger for 2027 elections

In a recent interview with Noire TV-Global Black TV, former presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, shed light on his openness to a possible merger between the LP and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Expressing gratitude for Atiku Abubakar’s supportive stance, especially regarding a potential Southeast candidate for the 2027 presidential election, Obi emphasized his overarching concern for Nigeria’s welfare over personal ambitions.

He stated, “I’m not desperate to be president. I’m desperate to see Nigeria work, especially for the poor people because we have a lot of potential.”

Addressing the topic of a merger between the PDP and LP, Obi asserted his willingness to entertain the idea if it aimed at enhancing governance and unlocking Nigeria’s vast potential.

He clarified, “If the merger is to be able to govern Nigeria properly, unlock all those things that will make Nigeria a better place, I’m for it.”

However, Obi firmly stated his opposition to mergers or alliances driven solely by power acquisition or electoral victories.

He stressed, “If it’s just a merger for election or state capture, I’m not for it or part of it. I don’t want to be part of anything like that.”

Emphasizing the importance of unity and collaboration, whether at the party or individual level, Obi underscored the need for collective efforts to build a better Nigeria.

He concluded, “It might be at the party level, it might be at the individual level. Might be at any level. But we must come together to be able to build a better Nigeria.”
