Over 6,000 sign petition to prevent Brymo from receiving 8th AFRIMA Award

In response to Brymo’s remarks regarding Igbos on his Twitter page, the  Nigerian musician Olawale Ashimi, has become a target of a petition.

The singer has come under fire for saying that the movement for Biafra would make an Igbo president nothing more than a “pipe fantasy.”

After receiving criticism from other celebrities and fans, Brymo stuck to his guns and said he wasn’t sorry for his remarks that were labeled “anti-Igbo.”

Brymo was nominated for an All Africa Music Award in the category of “SongWriter of the Year” in November 2022, along with singers from other African nations.

Some Nigerians have joined a petition to prevent the artist from receiving the prize while voting for the category is still open.

The petition stated that the artist would receive a clear message if he didn’t win the prize due to his “hateful statements” about Igbos.

Charles Ogundele started the petition which stated: “Brymo recently sent a number of abusive tweets targeting the Igbo tribe of Nigeria, even retweeting a tweet that claimed that all Igbos are stupid.

“In one of his tweets, he wrote ‘f*ck omo Igbo’, which translates to ‘f*ck the Igbo people.’

“His actions are ones which spark disunity and hatred in a multicultural nation that Nigeria is.

“Preventing him from winning the All Africa Music Award would send a strong message to him, and people like him, that he can’t get away with such blatant ethnic bigotry.”

At the time of filing this report, the petition has been signed by over  6,000 people.
