Ogun Assembly in turmoil as 18 lawmakers impeach Speaker

Crisis on Tuesday hit the Ogun State House of Assembly as 18 lawmakers impeached the Speaker, Rt Hon Olakunle Oluomo.

Oluomo was impeached for alleged embezzlement of funds, highhandedness and related offences.

The lawmakers, in a simple majority decision by 18 out of the 26 members, however, immediately elected the member representing Odeda constituency, Hon Oludaisi Elemide as the new Speaker of the Assembly.

Earlier, unconfirmed reports from within the Assembly complex confirmed several shots fired in the complex over suspected impeachment notice on the Speaker Oluomo.

It was also learnt that Oluomo’s impeachment resulted in a chaotic atmosphere at the Assembly complex following the tension which enveloped the area after security agents fired some tear gas to disperse the agitated crowd that had gathered.

Circumstances and details of Oluomo’s impeachment saga has however remained shrouded.
