Ogun Assembly crisis: I remain Speaker, Oluomo insists, challenges impeachment in court

Embattled Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Olakunle Oluomo, on Friday, insisted that he remains the Speaker, disclosing that he’s already challenging his impeachment procedure in court.

Oluomo broke his silence three days after he was impeached by 18 lawmakers in the Assembly.

Oluomo while addressing a press conference at his quarters on Friday, described his impeachment as dramatic.

He disclosed that he chose to leave the premises for the Governor’s Office when his impeachment proceedings commenced.

He was impeached last Tuesday and immediately replaced by Oludaisi Elemide, a lawmaker representing Odeda constituency.

But Oluomo accused the aggrieved lawmakers of terrorizing him since the beginning of his second term.

“I remain Speaker of the Assembly. I have even filed a suit asking the court to determine whether the Speaker of the Assembly could be impeached through a jest,” Oluomo said.

On the allegations of financial misappropriation leveled against him, Oluomo stated that he had records of transactions between him and the members of the house.

The impeached Speaker expressed disappointment in the failure of Governor Dapo Abiodun and the leadership of the All Progressives Congress to intervene in the crisis.

He said having waited endlessly for the party’s leadership to intervene without success, he took the decision to take the matter to court.

Despite describing Governor Abiodun as his benefactor and expressing gratitude for endorsing his candidacy for the Speakership twice, Oluomo emphasized the need for justice.

He also acknowledged Senator Adeola Olamilekan, popularly known as Yayi, as a personal friend.

The embattled Speaker praised the transparency in the distribution of Christmas gifts to the House by Yayi and others.
