Nollywood Mourns: Junior Pope laid to rest in hometown Ukehe, Nsukka

In a solemn ceremony attended by family, friends, and colleagues, the late Nollywood actor Junior Pope was laid to rest in his hometown of Ukehe, Nsukka on Thursday.

The burial marked the final chapter in the life of one of Nigeria’s most beloved actors, whose contributions to the film industry have left an indelible mark.

Junior Pope, whose full name was Pope Obumneme Odonwodo, passed away on May 7, 2024, at the age of 38. His death was met with an outpouring of grief from fans and fellow actors, who remembered him not only for his on-screen charisma but also for his off-screen humility and generosity.

The burial ceremony began with a funeral service held at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Ukehe. The church was filled to capacity, with many more standing outside to pay their respects. Emotional tributes were delivered by close friends and colleagues, including notable Nollywood stars such as Mercy Johnson, Zubby Michael, and Chacha Eke, who spoke of Pope’s dedication to his craft and his positive influence on those around him.

Following the service, a procession made its way to the Odonwodo family compound, where Junior Pope was laid to rest.

Traditional Igbo rites were observed, reflecting Pope’s deep connection to his heritage. The atmosphere was one of deep sorrow, as mourners struggled to come to terms with the loss of a figure who had brought so much joy through his work.

Junior Pope began his acting career in the early 2000s and quickly rose to prominence with his roles in films such as “The Assassin’s Code,” “Secret Adventures,” and “Royal Father.”

His versatility as an actor allowed him to excel in a variety of genres, from action-packed dramas to romantic comedies. Over the years, he garnered numerous awards and nominations, solidifying his status as one of Nollywood’s most talented actors.

In addition to his acting career, Junior Pope was known for his philanthropic efforts. He frequently supported charitable causes and was an advocate for youth empowerment and education. His commitment to giving back to his community earned him widespread respect and admiration.

As the sun set over Ukehe, the mood was somber yet filled with a sense of gratitude for the legacy Junior Pope left behind. His wife, Jennifer, and their three children stood by the graveside, supported by a close-knit community that has promised to keep his memory alive.

Nollywood will undoubtedly feel the absence of Junior Pope, but his contributions to the industry and his impact on the lives of many will not be forgotten.
