Nigerian Army sees 29 generals retire, Major General advocates for enhanced combat capabilities

Twenty-nine generals from the Nigerian Army’s Infantry Corps have left active military service, marking a dramatic transition at the Jaji Military Cantonment in Kaduna State.

A ceremony at the military cantonment marked the end of the retiring commanders’ remarkable careers, which included 19 major generals and 10 brigadiers general.

Speaking on behalf of the retirees, Major General Victor Ezugwu underlined the significance of improving combat skills in combating terrorism and banditry.

He emphasized the potential implications of developing army aircraft and improving night fighting capabilities in addressing current security concerns.

Ezugwu advised existing officers and troops to stay watchful and proactive in combating emerging challenges to Nigeria’s sovereignty.

He emphasized the importance of ongoing progress, urging successors to not only maintain but surpass previous successes.

“The frontline is expanding, and the Nigerian Army is becoming increasingly committed, with the eyes of the nation and the world on it,” Ezugwu stated, emphasizing the Infantry Corps’ critical role in carrying out the army’s mission.

He urged the Infantry Corps to respond to asymmetric threats by taking preemptive measures and strategizing.

Addressing the need for tactical changes, Ezugwu advocated for improvements in night combat capabilities, frontline intelligence collecting, and basic field craft training.

He emphasized the need for vigorous fighting patrols, ambushes, observation posts, and battle drills to maintain control and security within operational zones.

The retirement of these experienced generals is a watershed moment for the Nigerian Army, encouraging reflection on previous accomplishments and future initiatives to confront changing security threats.
