Negotiation with Labor: Shift focus from minimum wage to realistic living wage, Reps tell FG

In a notable move, the House of Representatives has urged the Federal Government to shift its focus from fixing a minimum wage to establishing a realistic living wage that aligns with current market conditions.

This call came during a session held at the National Assembly on Wednesday, where lawmakers deliberated on key issues concerning labor negotiations and industrial actions.

Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda emphasized the urgency of amending the minimum wage bill, urging swift action akin to the recent amendment of the national anthem.

Chinda suggested that if President Bola Tinubu refuses to approve the bill, the National Assembly should assert its authority by overriding his decision.

Moreover, the lawmakers expressed condemnation for the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) for their role in shutting down the national grid during a nationwide industrial strike on Monday. This action, they argued, had severe repercussions, including loss of lives and disruption of essential services.

According to a statement from Ndidi Mbah, spokesperson for the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), union members forcefully expelled and assaulted grid operators before disabling the grid in protest.

In response to these developments, the House of Representatives underscored the need for a shift in labor negotiations toward addressing the concept of a realistic living wage.

Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu highlighted provisions within the Trade Dispute Act that prohibit labor unions from shutting down critical sectors during industrial actions.

Additionally, the lawmakers called upon the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to initiate a downward review of electricity tariffs, aiming to alleviate the burden on consumers amidst economic challenges.

This stance by the House of Representatives reflects a broader concern for socioeconomic stability and equity, emphasizing the importance of fair wages and responsible labor practices in driving sustainable development.

As discussions progress, stakeholders anticipate further deliberations and actions aimed at fostering a conducive environment for labor relations and economic growth.

Stay tuned for updates on this evolving situation.
