Mob kills two policemen, injure two others in Edo

A mob in Ikpeshi in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo state has beaten two riot policemen to death, and also injured two others.

The mob action was said to have occurred after an incident involving a Toyota Hilux vehicle belonging to escort-duty policemen in the convoy of former Edo House of Assembly member Emmanuel Agbaje, which hit a motorcycle and killed the rider, a woman, and her child.

Sources said Ikpeshi youths then besieged the office of the Edo State Security Vigilance Network, where the two policemen were taken, overpowered the operatives and beat the two policemen to death.

But the two other policemen were rescued by the vigilance members, who also recovered their rifles.

The rescued officers are currently undergoing treatment at an undisclosed hospital in Edo.

The four policemen were from Police Mobile Force (PMF) 19, Port Harcourt in Rivers State.

Chairman of Akoko-Edo local government council, Tajudeen Alade, condemned the action of the Ikpeshi youths.

He declared that the persons involved would be identified, arrested and prosecuted to serve as a deterrent to other errant youths.

State Police Public Relations Officer, Chidi Nwabuzor, a Superintendent of Police, also confirmed the incident.
