KWASU dismisses lecturer for alleged sexual harassment

Kwara State University, Malete, has dismissed an academic staff, Mr Pelumi Adewale, following his alleged sexual harassment of one Miss Tosin Adegunsoye, a student of the Department of Pure and Applied Sciences.

This was disclosed by KWASU Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mustapha Akanbi, in Ilorin on Monday while addressing a news conference to herald the eighth and ninth convocation ceremonies of the institution.

According to Akanbi, Adewale had ceased to be a staffer of the school for bringing the institution into disrepute.

“The security agency has taken up the case and it is in court already, but I am informing you officially that the man is now an ex-staff member of the institution.

“He is a disgrace to our great institution and we won’t condone such acts,” the VC said.

Recall that Adewale was on September 11 arraigned before a magistrate court sitting in Ilorin, over an accusation of sexual harassment.

His arraignment came after the State Intelligence Bureau arrested him over offences bordering on criminal intimidation, sexual harassment and examination malpractices.

The female student, Adegunsoye, who Adewale allegedly harassed sexually had in a petition dated October 15, claimed that the lecturer who was teaching a course, MLS 212 Cell and Molecular Biology, had called her and threatened to fail her in her forthcoming examination if she did not allow him to have sexual intercourse with her.

On getting the report, police were said to have asked Adegunsoye to play along with the lecturer in order to prove her claim.

Adewale was said to have later lured the female student into his bedroom apartment around 8:30 pm at Taoheed Road, Basin Area, Ilorin, where he gave her a new question paper and KWASU answer script to rewrite her examination on the condition she would allow him to have sexual intercourse with her till daybreak.

In the process, a police detective, who was monitoring from a hiding location arrested the lecturer.

When Adewale was arraigned in court, the presiding Magistrate in the case, Ibrahim Mohammed, granted him bail in the sum of N200,000 and adjourned the case till December 8, for further mention.
