Tragedy struck in Ogun State as unknown gunmen, suspected to be cultists, carried out a targeted assassination on Adeyinka Folarin, the Baasegun of the Itunsokun community. The incident occurred on Monday night at around 8 pm when the gunmen attacked Folarin in his residence in Sagamu.
Adeyinka Folarin, a prominent traditional chief and member of the Akarigbo in-council, fell victim to the assailants in a targeted attack that has sent shockwaves through the community. The gunmen, believed to be cultists, executed the attack with precision, leaving residents in fear and uncertainty.
Two traditional rulers, on condition of anonymity, confirmed the tragic killing. One of them expressed limited knowledge about the incident, stating, “We heard that the chief who is a popular traditional chief was killed last night. He is popularly called Baasegun. We, however, can’t confirm the identity of the assailants, leaving the police and other security agencies to conduct their investigations.”
The news of Folarin’s assassination prompted Sagamu Local Government workers to abruptly shut down operations for the day, anticipating potential violence and unrest in the aftermath of the killing.
An anonymous source from the local government highlighted the tense atmosphere in the town, stating, “Tension is very high in the town as I speak to you. Workers are already moving out of the local government secretariat to avoid being caught in any form of crisis. Many are saying the man was killed by cultists, but no one can confirm this; the information is still scanty.”
Despite attempts to seek official information, the Spokesperson of the Ogun State Police Command, SP Omolola, has yet to provide a response as of the time of filing this report.
The community is grappling with shock and apprehension, awaiting updates from law enforcement agencies to shed light on the motive behind the targeted assassination. Residents express concern over rising tension and anxiously await the outcome of investigations into this tragic incident.
The assassination of Folarin, the Baasegun of Itunsokun community, underscores the challenges of security in Nigeria.
As authorities investigate this grave incident, the community mourns the loss of a respected traditional chief, and questions surrounding the motive behind the attack linger, heightening the need for swift and thorough law enforcement actions.
