Gov Abiodun vows tough action against traditional rulers involved in unauthorised land deals

Segun Ayinde, Abeokuta

Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State stated on Tuesday that his administration would take decisive action against any traditional rulers found to be selling or allocating land for illegal mining without proper authorization.

He also emphasized that his office would soon issue an Executive Order to address any Obas and Baales found engaging in such activities, warning them to steer clear of partisan politics.

Abiodun expressed concern over the adverse environmental effects and threats to critical public infrastructure caused by unauthorized land sales and illegal mining in some communities, affirming that any traditional rulers implicated would face consequences.

He made these remarks during the inauguration of Olu of Ilaro and Paramount Ruler of Yewaland, Oba Kehinde Olugbenle, as the new chairman of the Ogun State Council of Obas, held at the Oba’s Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

The governor stressed that the traditional rulers’ role is to support the government in its developmental efforts across the state, not to act as agents of destruction, urging them to continue using their revered positions to promote peace and unity.

He described the traditional institution as a vital component of governance aimed at fostering good governance in the state, pledging his government’s support and empowerment of monarchs through the provision of necessary resources, infrastructure, and platforms for effective discharge of their duties.

Abiodun acknowledged the resilience and adaptability of Yoruba culture amidst the encroachment of Western civilization, highlighting the ongoing interaction between tradition and modernity in shaping Yorubaland’s cultural landscape.

“We value your insights and recommendations regarding matters affecting your welfare and that of the people,” he said.

“As an administration, we recognize the significant role played by our Royal Fathers in the rapid development and transformation of Ogun State. Your wisdom, insight, and grassroots connection are invaluable as we strive for a prosperous and inclusive society.”

He expressed gratitude to the traditional rulers for their support in implementing the administration’s development agenda, acknowledging their leadership in grassroots communities.

Congratulating the new Chairman, Abiodun urged him to utilize his intellect to unite and advance the state’s traditional institution.

He commended the outgoing Chairman, the Akarigbo and Paramount ruler of Remoland, Oba Babatunde Ajayi, for his exemplary leadership in the past two years, attributing the success of his administration to the support of the monarchs.

In his welcome address, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Ganiyu Hamzat, praised the governor for his unwavering commitment to the welfare of traditional rulers and their communities.

He commended Oba Babatunde Ajayi for his meritorious tenure and expressed confidence in the incoming Chairman’s ability to maintain the positive synergy between the state government and traditional rulers.

In his acceptance speech, the new Chairman, Oba Olugbenle, thanked Governor Abiodun for his dedication to the traditional institution and the overall development of Ogun State.

He pledged the continued cooperation and support of the Ogun State Council of Obas to the present administration in achieving further progress in the state.

The immediate past Chairman, Oba Babatunde Ajayi, reflected on his tenure’s achievements in fostering unity, discipline, and collaboration with the government for development, peace, and prosperity in the state.
