Fresh protest erupts in Kano over Sanusi’s reinstatement as Emir

Kano State witnessed another wave of protest as demonstrators took to the streets demanding the removal of Muhammadu Sanusi II and the reinstatement of Aminu Ado Bayero as the Emir of Kano.

The protest, which occurred close to the Nasarawa residence of the Emir where Aminu Ado Bayero is residing, saw protesters wielding placards bearing various inscriptions. They chanted solidarity songs as they marched through the streets, voicing their demands.

This recent protest follows a similar demonstration in the Gaya area of the state earlier. The protesters expressed their opposition to the dissolution of the Gaya Emirate by the state government.

The dissolution of the Gaya Emirate was part of the broader action taken by the Kano State Government following the amendment of the Kano Emirates Council Law of 2019.

The amendment, passed by the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP)-controlled House of Assembly, reversed the previous law enacted by former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje in 2020, which created additional emirates and dethroned Muhammadu Sanusi II as the 14th Emir of Kano.

Governor Abba Yusuf finalized the dissolution of the emirate councils by signing the amendment bill into law on Thursday.

He subsequently ordered the emirs of the affected emirates, including Aliyu Ibrahim Abdulkadir, Emir of Gaya, to hand over to Deputy Governor Abdulsalam Gwarzo, who oversees the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.

Following these developments, Governor Yusuf presented Sanusi with his appointment letter as the 16th Emir of Kano.

Sanusi returned to the palace in Kano and assumed the throne, attributing his reinstatement to divine will.
