First Lady advocates capital punishment for kidnappers, urges legislative action

In a resolute stance against the rising menace of kidnapping, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the First Lady, has called for capital punishment for perpetrators of this heinous crime.

Senator Tinubu made this passionate appeal during a meeting with national women leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Friday.

Expressing her dismay at the heart-wrenching act of kidnapping innocent children, especially young girls, Senator Tinubu urged state governors and lawmakers to enact laws prescribing capital punishment for those found guilty of kidnapping.

In a statement issued by her Special Adviser, Media, Busola Kukoyi, Senator Tinubu emphasized the need to treat kidnappers as criminals deserving severe consequences.

“They are cowards. Our hearts bleed. I call on the state governments that once we take hold of them, they deserve capital punishments. Why can’t they take men of their size, why are they touching women and children,” she stated.

The First Lady underscored the impact of kidnapping on the nation’s future, emphasizing that the criminals are attempting to destroy the investments parents make in their children.

She passionately argued for capital punishment for captured kidnappers, asserting, “I believe most mothers will support me on this because we carry our children for nine months, and we cannot watch what we love to wither away.”

Senator Tinubu further highlighted President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, emphasizing its commitment to creating opportunities for women to thrive economically, socially, and politically.

She urged women leaders to play a crucial role in the nation’s development, advocating for empowerment, inclusion, and the welfare of women within the party and across the nation.

Celebrating International Women’s Day, Senator Oluremi Tinubu encouraged women to support and uplift one another, stressing that investing in women is not charity but a vital strategy for building the nation’s future. The First Lady charged the gathering to be each other’s keepers, fostering a collective commitment to achieving remarkable accomplishments together.

The group, led by its National Women Leader, Dr. Mary Idele Alile, expressed gratitude for the impacts of Senator Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) and requested her assistance in advocating for increased inclusion in government activities. They acknowledged the transformative changes brought about by RHI, including the Elderly Support Scheme, National Scholarship Programme, and Women in Agric Support Programme.
