FG begins compensation payments for Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project

The Federal Government has kicked off the process of compensating property owners affected by the construction of the 700-kilometer Lagos-Calabar Highway, with payments commencing today, May 1, 2024.

The Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, made this announcement during a stakeholders meeting held in Lagos State on Wednesday. Umahi reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring fair compensation for property owners situated along the designated federal government right-of-way.

Speaking further, Umahi revealed that the compensation would be disbursed based on the government’s old compensation rate and would primarily target property owners located within the gazetted areas along the highway route.

In addition to the compensation initiative, Umahi disclosed plans to enhance the security infrastructure on the Third Mainland Bridge by installing solar-powered cameras.

This move comes as part of proactive measures to address concerns regarding the condition of piles supporting the bridge, which have been adversely affected by erosion and illegal dredging activities.

Umahi emphasized the strategic importance of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project, highlighting its potential to connect nine states, including Lagos, and integrate key infrastructure developments such as the deep-sea port, modernized road networks, and the Dangote Refinery. He underscored the project’s role in fostering economic diversification and growth across the corridor.

The commencement of compensation payments marks a significant milestone in the implementation of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project, demonstrating the government’s commitment to infrastructure development and the welfare of affected stakeholders.
