FALANA TO FG: End Reprisal Attack in Delta Community over Killing of Soldiers

Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN, has issued a fervent plea to the Federal Government, urging an immediate cessation of reprisal attacks by Nigerian Army soldiers in the Okuama community of Ughelli South Local Government Area, Delta State.

In a statement released to the press on Sunday, Falana implored for swift action to address the escalating violence and ensure justice for all parties involved.

Expressing grave concern over recent events, Falana highlighted the tragic incident that unfolded on Thursday, March 14, 2024, when soldiers dispatched to quell a communal clash between Okuama and Okoloba communities were ambushed and brutally murdered.

The ensuing reprisal attacks have only exacerbated tensions, leading to further loss of life and destruction of property.

Falana emphasized the imperative need for a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the killings, stressing the importance of holding perpetrators accountable under both domestic and international law.

He condemned the wanton destruction of villages and underscored the fundamental principle that collective punishment is unacceptable.

In his statement, Falana articulated, “Unfortunately, some villages were attacked last night by angry soldiers. After the attack, the villages were set on fire during the nocturnal military invasion. Having regard to the destruction of Odi and Zaki Biam over the killing of soldiers, the authorities ought to have taken adequate measures to prevent the attack and burning of the affected villages. It is unfortunate that the Federal Government has not issued any statement on the barbaric incident.”

Falana urged the military to exercise restraint and refrain from further violence, emphasizing the need to uphold the rule of law and protect the rights of innocent civilians caught in the crossfire. He called upon the Delta State Government to collaborate with law enforcement agencies to apprehend and prosecute all individuals responsible for the bloodshed, both civilians and soldiers alike.

Furthermore, Falana emphasized the importance of providing adequate compensation to the families of the slain soldiers and victims of reprisal attacks, emphasizing the government’s duty to address their grievances and alleviate their suffering.

As the nation grapples with this tragic episode, Falana’s call for justice serves as a poignant reminder of the urgent need for peace and reconciliation in Delta State.

The Federal Government should heed to this plea and take decisive action to end the cycle of violence, ensuring that all parties involved receive fair and impartial treatment under the law.
