Explosion rocks Kano mosque, over 20 injured; suspect arrested

In a shocking incident early Wednesday morning, an explosion ripped through a mosque in Gadan Village, located in the Gezawa Local Government Area of Kano State.

The blast occurred at approximately 5:20 am during the Subhi (early morning) prayer, leaving 24 individuals with various injuries.

According to Abdullahi Kiyawa, a spokesman for the Kano State Police Command, preliminary forensic analysis suggests that the explosion was caused by petrol.

Among the injured are 20 adult males and four male children, all of whom were swiftly transported to Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital for urgent medical attention.

“The scene was cordoned off, and the victims were rushed to the hospital where they are currently receiving medical care,” Kiyawa stated.

Authorities swiftly moved to apprehend the principal suspect, identified as 38-year-old Shafi’u Abubakar.

In his statement to the police, Abubakar attributed his actions to a prolonged family dispute over inheritance.

“He said his action was purely in hostility following a prolonged family disagreement over sharing of inheritance, and he did that for his voice to be heard,” Kiyawa reported.

The Kano State Police Command assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway, promising to release more information as the probe progresses.

“The suspect is currently in police custody, and a detailed investigation is ongoing,” Kiyawa affirmed.

As the community grapples with the aftermath of this tragic incident, authorities are working tirelessly to ensure justice is served and to prevent any further acts of violence.
