Emefiele weeps over stalled arraignment for N6.9bn fraud

Suspended Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele, on Thursday, wept after the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory adjourned his arraignment to August 23, 2023.

Emefiele’s arraignment was stalled due to the absence of another defendant, Sa’adatu Yaro, in a corruption and conspiracy case brought against them by the Federal Government.

Emefiele broke down and wept after the adjournment, as some of his lawyers consoled him.

The suspended apex bank boss, Yaro and a firm, April 1616 Investment Ltd, were charged with engaging in conspiracy and procurement fraud, among others.

Emefiele is also accused of conferring corrupt advantages on his associates, including Yaro, said to be a Director in April 1616 to the tune of N6.9 billion.

Emefiele and Yaro were charged before the vacation judge, Justice Hamza Muazu of the Federal Capital Territory High Court, Abuja.

The suspended CBN governor was brought to court by Department of State Services operatives.

Immediately after the proceedings, he was returned to the custody of the DSS operatives, who had earlier brought him to court under very tight security.
