Eight arrested in connection with killing of six policemen in Delta

The Nigerian Police Force has announced the arrest of eight suspects in connection with the gruesome murder of six policemen in the Ohoro Forest in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State.

The slain officers, including Inspector Abe Olubunmi (IRT), Inspector Friday Irorere, Sergeant Kuden Elisha, Sergeant Akpan Aniette, Sergeant Ayere Paul, and Sergeant Ejemito Friday, were ambushed on February 23 while on a rescue mission.

In a statement issued by Force spokesman Olumuyiwa Adejobi on Saturday, it was revealed that the suspects are currently in custody and are assisting with the ongoing investigation.

Adejobi emphasized the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to ensuring that all those responsible for the reprehensible act are swiftly brought to justice.

“The Nigeria Police is deeply saddened by the heinous act of violence against our officers who were diligently performing their duty to protect and serve the community. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the fallen officers during this difficult time,” Adejobi stated.

The arrest followed intensive investigative efforts, with five suspects initially arrested shortly after the incident and an additional three suspects apprehended at different locations.

Meanwhile, Delta State has witnessed a series of brutal killings of security operatives, with the latest being the ambush and murder of 17 personnel of the Nigerian Army on March 14. The incident occurred during a peace mission to warring Okuama and Okoloba communities in the area.

The gruesome murder has drawn condemnation from authorities across Nigeria, with President Bola Tinubu describing it as an attack on the nation and issuing marching orders to security agencies to apprehend the masterminds.

Funeral rites were conducted in honor of the slain soldiers, with dignitaries including governors, federal lawmakers, military top brass, and other officials paying final respects to the fallen heroes.

The presence of top military officials, government representatives, and dignitaries underscores the gravity of the situation and the nation’s collective mourning for the sacrifices made by these brave men in service to their country.

As investigations continue into these tragic incidents, Nigerians await justice for the fallen officers and a concerted effort to ensure peace and security in affected regions.
