EFCC is watching you, desist from corruption, Benue gov warns LG chairmen

In a stern address to the Caretaker Chairmen of Benue State’s 23 Local Government Areas (LGAs), Governor Hyacinth Alia has issued a resolute warning against corruption, emphasizing the vigilant gaze of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Speaking at the opening of a two-day workshop titled ‘Responsive Local Government Leadership for Effective Local Government Administration in Benue State,’ Governor Alia underscored his administration’s uncompromising stance on corruption, stressing, “We have zero tolerance for corruption.”

Governor Alia reaffirmed his government’s commitment to granting full autonomy to local governments, urging chairmen to bolster Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) to facilitate meaningful development projects.

He admonished against neglecting their LGAs in favor of urban centers, insisting, “You must let the people feel your presence.”

Furthermore, Governor Alia pledged unscheduled visits to assess the performance of council chairmen firsthand, charging them to uphold transparency and accountability in governance.

He cautioned against the diversion of LGAs’ funds, warning of the EFCC’s scrutiny should transparency falter.

Highlighting the strategic importance of local governments in administrative processes, Governor Alia urged chairmen to identify challenges and propose solutions, emphasizing the need to make stakeholders proud through impactful governance.

Dr. Dennis Akura, Special Adviser to the Governor, Bureau for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, elucidated that the workshop aimed to empower local government administrators, equipping them with the necessary skills for effective governance.

As Benue State endeavors to enhance local government administration, Governor Alia’s admonitions serve as a clarion call for integrity and accountability, underlining the imperative of responsible governance in fostering development and serving the populace.
