In a shocking turn of events, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Gbolahan Olugbemi, attached to the Force Criminal Intelligence and Investigations Department (FCIID), has reportedly taken his own life in Ogbomoso, Oyo State.
The lifeless body of the DCP, who previously served as an aide to former Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala, was discovered in his apartment with a noose around his neck, indicating an apparent suicide.
While a comprehensive investigation is pending to determine the circumstances surrounding his death, preliminary indications suggest suicide, according to a source.
Reportedly returning home for the Easter celebration, the late DCP Olugbemi arrived at his residence on Petros Academy Street, Federal Low-Cost area unaccompanied.
Aged over 50, the deceased officer notably served as the Aide De Camp (ADC) to the late Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala during his eleven-month tenure from 2006 to 2007.
His residence has been cordoned off, with mourners gathering in clusters to grieve the tragic loss of the esteemed officer.
A neighbor recalled seeing the DCP occasionally arrive with police security, highlighting that he recently witnessed Olugbemi personally driving into his magnificent mansion. However, the neighbor noted that the DCP was often seen alone, with his family rarely accompanying him.
Additionally, sources revealed that the deceased had been grappling with depression for an extended period.
Despite his personal struggles, Olugbemi’s professional competence earned him commendation for his handling of the ENDSARS protests in 2020. Prior to his demise, he had served in various capacities, including as Divisional Police Officer in Ilupeju Area Commander in Ajah, and as Personal Assistant to two former Commissioners of Police in Lagos State.
Efforts to obtain an official statement from the Police Public Relations Officer of the Oyo State Command, SP Adewale Osifeso, were unsuccessful as he indicated he was occupied with his superior.
