Delta Governor Warns Monarchs: No Protection for Suspects in Soldiers’ Killing

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has issued a stern warning to traditional rulers in the state, cautioning them against shielding suspects involved in the recent killing of military personnel.

Last week, seventeen military personnel, including a lieutenant colonel, two majors, one captain, and thirteen soldiers, tragically lost their lives during a peacekeeping mission in Okuama community, Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State.

Addressing traditional rulers at the State Traditional Rulers’ Council Secretariat in Asaba, Governor Oborevwori emphasized the need for cooperation in the ongoing investigations, stating, “Delta is governed within the tenets of the rule of law and human decency. No kingdom should shield the perpetrators of this dastardly act.”

He further relayed assurances from President Tinubu and military authorities that innocent citizens in the state would not face victimization, urging traditional rulers not to protect any individuals involved in the crime.

Governor Oborevwori emphasized, “Do not hide or shield anybody. The Chief of Army Staff and Mr. President have assured me that innocent people will not be victimized; unless you connive with the killers of the soldiers.”

In addition to the warning, Governor Oborevwori recounted his immediate actions upon learning of the tragic incident, including meetings with national security officials and a visit to the affected communities.

He stressed the importance of justice and resolution in the wake of such shocking events.

Meanwhile, President Tinubu has extended condolences to the military and families of the deceased, promising that the fallen soldiers would be honored with national recognition and a dignified burial.

Speaking to members of the House of Representatives, President Tinubu affirmed the country’s commitment to addressing security challenges and ensuring justice for those who sacrificed their lives in service.
