DELTA: Alleged Army Shooting Leaves 50 Villagers Dead, Army Denies Accusations

Residents of Okuama community in Ughelli South Local Government Area, Delta State, have recounted a horrifying ordeal, alleging that soldiers unexpectedly opened fire on them during peace talks, resulting in the death of approximately 50 individuals.

This incident comes amidst escalating tensions following the loss of 16 military personnel, including a lieutenant colonel, in an ambush.

According to fleeing residents who sought refuge in the bush since March 14, the military personnel arrived for a peace talk with community leaders but later insisted on taking some leaders for further questioning, leading to a dispute. Subsequently, the soldiers allegedly opened fire at the town hall where the meeting was held, causing casualties within the community.

Residents described a scene of chaos and tragedy, with dead bodies scattered in the bush where they sought refuge. The community leader emphasized that the military’s sudden resort to violence took them by surprise, as they had initially welcomed the soldiers for peace talks.

Furthermore, residents claimed that the military returned the following day, March 15, and set houses ablaze, forcing more residents to flee the community. Some distraught mothers expressed concern for their missing children and appealed to the government for assistance.

Meanwhile, amidst allegations and counter-allegations, the Okoloba community pointed fingers at Okuama leaders for allegedly hiring a militant leader responsible for the ambush of soldiers.

In response, the Okuama community accused an Ijaw leader of instigating the shooting and killing of civilians by soldiers.

The Army headquarters has vehemently denied the accusations, describing them as propaganda.

Major Gen Onyema Nwachukwu, Director of Army Public Relations, condemned the murder of troops and emphasized that the soldiers were committed to maintaining peace and security in the region. He urged the public to disregard the propaganda and assured that efforts were underway to apprehend the perpetrators.

While tensions remain high in the region, the Army has vowed to identify and bring the culprits to justice, assuring law-abiding citizens that there will be no reprisal.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Toareed Lagbaja, expressed condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers and affirmed the military’s determination to apprehend the criminals responsible for the heinous act.
