Deadly clash erupts in Plateau, several feared dead, injured

A violent clash between rival youths in the Mikang Local Government Area of Plateau State has left several people dead and many others injured.

The clash, which reportedly began on Saturday night and continued into the early hours of Sunday, involved Taroh and Motola youths in the locality.

According to reports, the violence erupted over a disputed piece of land in the area.

Confirming the incident, the state Commissioner for Information, Musa Ashoms, expressed regret over the loss of lives and injuries sustained during the clash. He attributed the escalation of the situation to the attachment people have to their land, noting that disputes over land can often lead to heightened tensions.

Ashoms stated, “It started as a result of a dispute over land… It is something they could have controlled their nerves, but somehow, it got to a point where others too joined them and houses were burnt down and people were maimed.”

He urged the residents to seek alternative dispute resolution mechanisms rather than resorting to violence and taking the law into their own hands.

In response to the situation, security operatives have been deployed to the troubled area.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Alabo Alfred, assured the public that the area is now calm, with people resuming their normal activities. He also mentioned that investigations into the incident are ongoing.

The clash underscores the need for proactive measures to address underlying grievances and prevent further violence in the region.

Community leaders, government officials, and law enforcement agencies must work together to promote peace and stability, ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents.
