CSOs give FCT minister 14-day ultimatum to appoint Director of Treasury

The Coalition of Civil Society Organisations, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Chapter, has asked the FCT Minister, Malam Muhammed Bello, to appoint a Director to handle the Treasury Department of the FCT Administration (FCTA).

The coalition, in a statement on Friday in Abuja, also condemned the current situation where the permanent secretary of FCTA was “illegally performing the functions and duties of Director of Treasury in the last four years”.

It advised the minister to hasten the process of appointing a substantive and qualified director of treasury in the FCTA “within 14 days or face mass protest”.

Comrade Galadima Nagwamatse, the Abuja Coordinator of the coalition, who signed the statement, advised the minister to heed the call to avoid the consequences at the expiration of the ultimatum.

The group also threatened to picket the office of the head of service of the federation “for allowing maladministration by the permanent secretary of the FCT”.

It, however, commended the recent appointment of Secretaries to head various mandates, and thanked the minister for that action which it said was necessitated by “several protest by some groups”.

“We are happy because we believe it is better late than never,” the statement said.

It reminded the minister that the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria recognized peaceful demonstration to press home demands, and vowed to explore that option if the right thing was not done.

“At the appropriate time, we shall disclose to Nigerians how the absence of a substantive Treasurer has hurt the administrative system in the FCTA,” the statement said.
