BREAKING: ECOWAS orders stand-by force to restore constitutional order in Niger

“The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has issued a directive to its standby force to take action in restoring constitutional order within Niger Republic.

Omar Alieu Touray, the President of ECOWAS, announced this decision while presenting the resolution on the Niger coup during an ECOWAS Extraordinary meeting held in Abuja on Thursday.

Furthermore, ECOWAS has appealed to the African Union (AU), partner countries, and relevant institutions to extend their support for the resolution adopted by the sub-regional organization.

ECOWAS emphasized that its attempts to engage in dialogue with the military junta in Niger Republic have been met with defiance from the coup leaders. The ongoing detention of President Mohamed Bazoum and his family members by the junta has drawn strong condemnation.

The resolution explicitly states, “Instruct the committee of the Chief of Defence Staff to immediately activate the ECOWAS standby force, along with all its components.

“Order the deployment of the ECOWAS stand-by force to restore constitutional order in the Republic of Niger.”

This move underscores ECOWAS’s determination to address the situation in Niger and uphold constitutional governance in the region.
