Be selfless, Obasanjo urges Nigerian leaders

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has issued a stirring call to Nigeria’s leaders, urging them to embrace selflessness and view leadership as an opportunity to serve the people.

Obasanjo made these remarks during a courtesy visit to Governor Godwin Obaseki at the Government House in Benin City, the capital of Edo State.

In his address, Obasanjo emphasized that leadership should be seen as both an opportunity and a privilege, especially in the current economic climate that demands sacrifices from those in authority.

He lamented the challenges facing Nigeria but expressed optimism that the nation’s fortunes would eventually turn around for the better.

“The situation in Nigeria is hard, unfortunately so, but there is no bad situation that can’t be good but the question is when and how? All we should be saying to those who have the opportunity now… is: ‘it should not be me but we, not mine but ours, not my tomorrow but our tomorrow, not my generation but all generations including the generation coming. This is what sustainable development is all about,” Obasanjo stated, underscoring the importance of collective responsibility and intergenerational equity in nation-building.

Obasanjo also shared insights into his personal philosophy on maintaining good health and vitality at 87 years old. He attributed his well-being to the grace of God and emphasized the importance of maintaining a balanced lifestyle encompassing diet, rest, exercise, medical care, social interaction, and contentment.

Regarding Governor Obaseki’s developmental strides in Edo State, Obasanjo commended his efforts and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to learn more about the state’s recent progress and future prospects. He highlighted the importance of leadership that prioritizes the well-being and prosperity of the people.

Obasanjo’s visit to Benin City was not only to attend a family event but also to engage with the governor and Chief Security Officer of Edo State, underscoring the importance of dialogue and collaboration in fostering positive governance and sustainable development.

As Nigeria grapples with various challenges, Obasanjo’s message serves as a timely reminder of the values that should guide leadership in overcoming adversity and building a brighter future for all citizens.
