Bandits kill 15 worshippers inside mosque in Niger

…injure several others

Suspected bandits have killed no fewer than 15 worshippers and injured several others in an attack on a mosque in Ba’are Village, Mashegu Local Government Area of Niger State.

Witnesses said the bandits struck in the early hours and opened fire as the villagers were observing their morning prayers inside the mosque.

It was learnt that those who sustained injuries were rushed to the Kontagora General Hospital for treatment.

Two months ago, suspected bandits had gunned down 18 worshippers in another mosque in Mazakuka Village located within the same Mashegu Local Government Area, where the latest killings occurred.

Confirming the latest incident, Niger State Commissioner of Police, Monday Bala Kuryas, said only nine people were killed in the attack.

“Niger State Police Command has already drafted security personnel to the affected area to further safeguard lives and properties in that community,” Kuryas said.

The police commissioner assured that security agencies would continue to protect the lives and properties of the people of the state and other Nigerians, urging the public to always volunteer credible intelligence to security agencies.
