Akeredolu, a visionary leader, says Anglican Bishop

Bishop of Anglican Diocese of Owo, Ondo State, Stephen Fagbemi, on Thursday, described the late former governor of the state, Mr Rotimi Akeredolu, as a man who was always passionate about his service to God throughout his lifetime.

Remains of the late Akeredolu, who died in December 2023 after battling a protracted illness, were taken to Owo, his hometown on Wednesday, as part of his final rites.

In Owo, on Thursday, a service of songs was held at St. Andrew’s Cathedral Anglican Church, Imola, Owo, in honour of the late governor.

Bishop Fagbemi while speaking at the service, described late Akeredolu as “not only a governor but also as a visionary leader who was passionate about the things of God.”

The cleric stressed that Akeredolu has left a void that would be difficult to fill in the diocese, the state, and the nation at large.

He prayed to God to grant the family the strength to bear the loss.

Similarly, in his brief words of exhortation, the Anglican Bishop of Akure Diocese and Archbishop of Ondo Ecclesiastical Province, Simeon Borokini, said Akeredolu served the people of the state well.

The cleric urged everyone to always do good.

The late governor’s younger brother, Prof. Wole Akeredolu, in his speech, thanked the people on behalf of the family for their support and love for the late governor.

He said various testimonies and tributes about Akeredolu had consoled their family, reaffirming that their patriarch lived a life of significance and made a positive impact on the society.

Some of the dignitaries at the service of songs include: Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, Deputy Governor, Mr. Adelami Olayide; Deputy Governor of Kogi State, Joel Oyibo; the Minister of State for Youth Development, Olawande Ayodele; and Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Hellen Ogunwumiju; among others.

The burial programme continues on Friday as the late former Chairman of the Southern Governors’ Forum would be laid to rest at the burial site in Owo.

Before the interment, a funeral service would be held at St Andrew’s Church while reception of guests follows.
