Adequate security without state police’ll be a mirage – Jonathan

Former President Goodluck Jonathan says there can’t be adequate security in Nigeria if states do not have their own police.

The former president stated this while speaking at a one-day dialogue on State Police organised by the House of Representatives in Abuja on Monday.

Jonathan said the issue had become imperative, adding that there is no need to debate whether we need to have a state police or not but the operations.

According to him, during the 2014 conference when the matter of State Police came up, all delegates supported alongside other proposed security measures.

Jonathan added that while the issue of State Police is being discussed, other measures must also be taken into consideration to make the country better.

The former president said the operations of the Independent National Electoral Commission must be rejigged in such a way that the use of Police in elections would become minimal.

Jonathan said the laws must be strengthened to eliminate the lacuna that may enable political actors to misuse the state police in their favour or intimidate political opponents.
