Abuja School faces N500m lawsuit over bullying incident

The Lead British International School in Gwarinpa, Abuja, finds itself embroiled in legal proceedings as the family of Ms. Namitra Bwala, a student at the institution, files a N500 million lawsuit following a distressing bullying incident captured in a viral video.

In response to the widely circulated footage depicting Ms. Bwala being subjected to bullying by her peers, the family has initiated a civil suit against the institution.

The lawsuit, filed at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, seeks N500 million in damages and a public apology published in two national dailies.

The family’s decision to pursue legal action stems from the school’s alleged failure to fulfill its duty to provide a safe and supportive learning environment for their daughter.

According to the lawsuit, the school neglected to prevent the assault, promptly inform Ms. Bwala’s parents, or conduct a thorough investigation until the video gained traction on social media.

The legal complaint contends that the school’s inaction, while Ms. Bwala was under its supervision, amounts to negligence.

By filing the lawsuit, the family aims to hold the school accountable and compel necessary reforms to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

The legal action underscores the gravity of ensuring the safety and well-being of students within educational institutions and advocates for institutional responsibility in addressing incidents of bullying.
