A former lawmaker representing Kogi West, Senator Dino Melaye, on Tuesday lost the primary election for the senatorial ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party to return to the Senate.
He was defeated by a serving House of Representatives member, Hon. T.J. Yusuf.
In the primary conducted on Monday, both Melaye Yusuf scored 88 votes each. The development led to a rerun election on Tuesday.
In the rerun election, Yusuf defeated Melaye by 163 to 99 votes to pick the PDP ticket.
Yusuf, while speaking after he was declared the winner, extended the olive branch to his co-contestants, urging them to join hands with him to win the general election.
He commended the peaceful conduct of the primaries, promising to continue with his good work if elected at the general election.
Meanwhile, Melaye has alleged a gang up against him in the primary election.
He said he would have won the ticket but for party members who had worked against him in the election.
