…says ‘WAEC cannot determine when schools resume in Nigeria’
Federal Government, on Wednesday, suspended the planned resumption of federal schools.
The government also stopped students from participating in the 2020 West African Senior School Certificate Examinations earlier scheduled to begin on August 4 and end on September 5.
It, therefore, advised state governments to toe the same line for the sake of the health and well-being of the pupils.
Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, disclosed this while speaking with State House Correspondents at the end of a meeting of the Federal Executive Council presided over by the President Muhammadu Buhari.
According to Adamu, Federal schools will remain closed until it is safe to reopen them.
The minister also advised state governments that had set dates for the resumption of schools to reverse the decision.
He said that the West African Examinations Council lacked the powers to determine the date for the resumption of schools in Nigeria.
Adamu noted that he would prefer Nigerian students to lose an academic year than to expose them to health dangers posed by the raging COVID-19.
