$350m, N85m Loan: Don’t only complain, probe El-Rufai, Shehu Sani urges Kaduna govt

Former Senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, has called on the Kaduna State government to go after former Governor Nasir El-Rufai over the state’s substantial debt profile.

Sani made this assertion in a statement shared via his verified social media handle on Monday, urging Governor Uba Sani to establish an independent probe panel to scrutinize the immediate past administration’s handling of finances.

The call for investigation comes in the wake of revelations made by Governor Uba Sani, who disclosed that he inherited a staggering debt burden totaling $587 million, N85 billion, and 115 contractual liabilities from the El-Rufai administration.

Governor Uba Sani made these remarks during a recent Town Hall meeting held in Kaduna, where he highlighted the challenges posed by the exorbitant debt profile, particularly in meeting the state’s obligations such as the payment of workers’ salaries.

However, Shehu Sani contends that merely acknowledging the debt burden is insufficient to address the situation effectively.

He insists that an independent probe panel, led by a professional accountant or auditor, should be established to summon and scrutinize former government officials and their associated contractors.

The aim would be to hold them accountable for the alleged misappropriation or embezzlement of millions of dollars and billions in Naira, including the $350 million loan.

“Kaduna State is at its hour of reckoning with the truth I foretold and the truth for which I was vilified,” Sani emphasized, underscoring the urgency of conducting a thorough investigation to uncover any instances of financial misconduct or corruption that may have contributed to the state’s precarious financial situation.

Sani’s call for accountability reflects a growing demand for transparency and integrity in governance, with many advocating for robust measures to combat corruption and ensure responsible fiscal management in public administration.

It remains to be seen how the Kaduna State government will respond to these calls for investigation and whether concrete actions will be taken to address the concerns raised by Shehu Sani and other stakeholders.
