…say ‘two vehicles burnt, four suspects arrested’
Police in Lagos have explained how the deadly clash between Yoruba Nation agitators and its operatives occurred at Ojota on Monday.
There was commotion in the area following a confrontation between the demonstrators and police operatives.
In a photo posted on Twitter, a young man lay lifeless while another is feared dead and many others injured in the violence.
State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, said in a statement on the bloody incident, “Miscreants masquerading as Yoruba Nation Agitators” came out in their hundreds, disrupting social and commercial activities at Ojota.”
Hundeyin said in response, policemen from Alausa Division and the Raid Response Squad (RRS) moved in to disperse the unlawful gathering and prevent a breakdown of law and order.
The statement added, “The miscreants attacked the police, shooting, and destroying two vehicles in the process.
“One person has been confirmed dead, while two police officers shot by the miscreants are currently receiving treatment. Four suspects have been arrested and investigations have commenced.”
The police spokesman vowed that the Lagos Command would not allow any person or group of persons to disrupt the peace in Lagos.
It could not be ascertained if the dead person was hit by a stray bullet or deliberately shot by the police.
“They shot teargas and guns at us. They have killed one person, this is Ojota”, a protester said in a video.
A Toyota Hilux belonging to the police was burnt. The roads were also littered with bonfires.
