Yemi Alade Honored as Spotify’s EQUAL Africa Artiste for September

Spotify, the popular online music streaming service, has named Afropop star Yemi Alade as its EQUAL Africa artist for September.

This announcement was made by Phiona Okumu, Spotify’s Head of Music for Sub-Saharan Africa, in a statement released on the 13th of September, 2024, in Lagos.

According to Okumu, “Spotify EQUAL Africa programme is dedicated to empowering female voices in Africa, spotlighting artistes who continue to push boundaries with their artistry.”

She further emphasized, “Yemi Alade exemplifies the calibre of talent the programme aims to support.”

She expressed Spotify’s pride in collaborating with Alade, stating that the platform would continue to leverage the EQUAL Africa initiative to uplift female musicians, amplify their voices, and showcase their talents to a global audience.

Okumu also highlighted Alade’s career, which has spanned over a decade, solidifying her status as one of Nigeria’s most influential female artists.

This success, she said, has earned Alade a strong fanbase both locally and internationally.

Additionally, Okumu praised the Afropop star’s electrifying performances and powerful vocals, which have garnered her international acclaim and enabled her to bring African music to the global stage.

She said“Alade’s undeniable talent and powerful voice has captivated audiences across continents, as she collaborated with global superstars such as Beyoncé, Angélique Kidjo and Awilo Longomba.

“She has also toured the world, showcasing the rich beauty of African music, captivating audiences across continents and cultures.”

Recall that Alade has described her music as a seamless fusion of high-life pop, R&B, and Afrobeat, creating a sound that’s uniquely her own.

“It is a beautiful blend that is inspired by a bit of jazz or blues here and there. If you listen closely you will pick the tones.

“I don’t like to be in a box, but I know that my music is a fusion of African sounds, and the core of my music is African rhythm,” she said.
