The World Trade Organization (WTO) has scheduled a special General Council meeting on November 28-29, 2024, to advance the selection process for its next Director-General.
In a statement on Tuesday, the General Council Chair, Ambassador Petter Ølberg of Norway, outlined the agenda: “The first day will allow members to hear a presentation from Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on her vision for the WTO, followed by a question-and-answer session.”
He added, “The second day could then provide an opportunity for members to take a decision on the appointment of the next Director-General.”
On November 9, the WTO announced Okonjo-Iweala, who has led the organisation since March 2021, as the sole candidate for the role.
Her term ends in August 2025, and she has focused her leadership on revitalising the organisation.
The WTO’s Director-General is selected by consensus among its 166 members.
