Edo State First Lady, Mrs. Betsy Obaseki, has urged women who are childless to see themselves not as barren, but as fruitful and potential mothers, emphasizing that motherhood comes in God’s time.
Mrs. Obaseki made this heartfelt appeal during a Zoom meeting on Saturday with over 200 Edo women in the diaspora, alongside Mrs. Ifeyinwa Ighodalo, wife of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate.
The First Lady’s remarks were in response to a viral video in which Senator Adams Oshiomhole made comments about her childlessness.
Speaking to the women, she shared her own personal experiences of loss and pain from miscarriages and stillbirths but affirmed that women should not define themselves by their challenges.
“My words of comfort to you, like myself, who have conceived and experienced miscarriages, painful stillbirths, and evacuations of babies who died in our wombs and as a result, have no children to show for the pain we have endured, is this: ‘You are not barren.’ I dare to call you fruitful,” Obaseki said.
She encouraged women to focus on living full lives, reassuring them that children would come at the right time. Obaseki further emphasized that being fruitful is not limited to childbearing, but also includes making meaningful contributions to society.
“Women can fulfill God’s purpose in many ways beyond motherhood,” she added.
In her remarks, Mrs. Ighodalo thanked the women for their support and promised to continue Betsy Obaseki’s initiatives for women and girls in Edo State if her husband is elected.
Mrs. Adesuwa Obasohan, founder of the Edo women in diaspora group, welcomed participants and reaffirmed their support for the PDP’s candidate, just as they had backed Governor Godwin Obaseki during his tenure.
