The Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) Chairman, Professor Mahmoud Yakubu, is not being sued, according to the Department of State Services (DSS).
The DSS said in a brief statement released by its spokesman, Peter Afunanya, that a recent article with the heading “Court Stops DSS from Arresting INEC Chairman” contained inaccurate information.
According to the DSS imagemaker, the Service expressed its displeasure to the newspaper’s editorial staff after the piece was published, and an agreement was made to remedy the issues identified; however, those issues have not yet been addressed.
Dr. Afunanya emphasized the significance of his statement in influencing public perception, particularly in light of the fact that the aforementioned story is inaccurate.
He said, “It falsely left an impression that the Service went to Court against the INEC Chairman.
“Nonetheless, the Service is aware of the antics of some mischievous elements who are desirous of fomenting crisis in the country, including creating unnecessary controversies around the forthcoming general elections.
“One of their strategies is to subvert the efforts of the Service in ensuring peaceful coexistence and harmony. Another is a determination to overheat the polity and subtly exploit the judiciary to distract or even undermine not only the Service but other security and law enforcement agencies from undertaking their constitutional roles.”
Therefore, the DSS issued a warning to these individuals and organizations urging them to abandon their cunning schemes. Additionally, it urged all significant stakeholders to exercise caution and thwart any attempts to utilize them to subvert the law.
The Service urged everyone to join in the effort to achieve national stability and unity while assuring Nigerians and the international community of its commitment to the maintenance of law and order, including the accomplishment of a free and fair election in 2023 as already promised by Mr. President and Commander-in-Chief.
