‘Violence has no place in Democracy’: Tinubu condemns assassination attempt on Trump

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has condemned an assassination attempt on former US President Donald Trump, calling the incident distasteful and emphasizing that “violence has no place in democracy.”

Trump, the Republican candidate for the November election, was rushed off stage when gunshots were fired at a campaign rally on Saturday in Pennsylvania. The shocking incident has fueled anxiety in the run-up to the 2024 election. Trump narrowly escaped, later saying, “I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear.”

The Federal Bureau of Investigation disclosed that 20-year-old Thomas Crooks fired multiple gunshots, resulting in one fatality and injuring two others.

In a statement on Sunday, Tinubu expressed his sympathies to Trump and condemned the attack. “The attack on former President Donald Trump is distasteful and goes beyond the pale of democratic norms. Violence has no place in democracy,”

Tinubu said. “I extend my sympathies to the former President and wish him relief. I also condole with the family of the deceased and those wounded and wish them a quick recovery.”

President Tinubu noted that Nigeria stands in solidarity with the United States of America at this time.
