The victims of the tragic stampede that occurred during a Christmas rice distribution in Okija, Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State, have been laid to rest.

The incident, which claimed the lives of 21 people, mostly women and children, took place on December 21, 2024, during a palliative distribution organised by Chief Ernest Azudialu-Obiejesi through his Obijackson Foundation.

An inter-denominational burial service was held on Friday at St. Mary’s Field, Okija.

The low-key event was attended by families of the victims, survivors, community members, and notable personalities. It was organised by the Obijackson Foundation in collaboration with the royal palace of the Okija community.

Very Rev. Donald Chukwudolue, delivering his lesson from Revelation 21:1-8, prayed for the families of the deceased.

He said, “We ask God to wipe away every tear and console the families of the deceased. We pray such an accident will not occur in Okija again. Okija mourns, Anambra mourns, and Nigeria mourns.”

Rt. Rev. Ralph Okafor, Bishop of Ihiala Diocese, Anglican Communion, urged families to find strength in God. Reading from Psalms 23, he said, “Past is past; we must move on.”

Chief Ernest Azudialu-Obiejesi, founder of the Obijackson Foundation, expressed deep sorrow over the incident and vowed to prevent such tragedies in the future.

He said, “Today, we gather here with heavy hearts to honour the memory of those we lost. I sincerely express my deepest condolences to the families of the victims and the entire Okija community.

“This tragedy has strengthened our resolve to ensure it never happens again. Together, we will rebuild and make Okija a safer place.

“The Obijackson Foundation remains steadfast in its commitment to human development and will continue to support the community.”

The traditional ruler of Okija, Emeka Okezie, encouraged the foundation to continue its philanthropic work, despite the unfortunate incident.

Chief Daniel Chukwudozie, Chairman of Dozzy Group of Companies, consoled the victims and donated ₦10 million to support their families.

Some survivors expressed sorrow over the incident, calling on God to grant eternal rest to the deceased.
