French World Cup winner Raphaël Varane has officially announced his retirement from professional football, citing injury concerns, just weeks after completing a surprise transfer to Italian side Como this summer.
The 31-year-old defender, who had been battling a series of injuries in recent years, made the tough decision to hang up his boots after a career filled with remarkable achievements.
In an emotional statement shared with fans, Varane reflected on his journey in football and the difficult decision to call time on his career.
“In my career, I have taken on many challenges, rose to occasion after occasion, almost all of it was supposed to be impossible,” Varane expressed. “Incredible emotions, special moments, and memories that will last a lifetime.”
His move to Serie B side Como was seen as an opportunity for Varane to rediscover his fitness and enjoy the final stages of his career away from the pressures of top-flight European football. However, persistent injury concerns have forced him to make the difficult decision to retire earlier than expected.
“Reflecting on these moments, it is with immense pride and a feeling of fulfilment that I am announcing my retirement from the game that we all love,” he added.
Varane’s illustrious career spanned over a decade, featuring stints at Real Madrid and Manchester United, where he won multiple UEFA Champions League titles and domestic league trophies. He was also a pivotal figure in France’s 2018 FIFA World Cup triumph, cementing his place as one of the best defenders of his generation.
Fans and former teammates have been quick to pay tribute to Varane, praising his leadership, composure, and ability to perform on the biggest stages of world football.
