Over $23 million looted by late Military President, Sani Abacha, is about to be returned to Nigeria by the United States Government.
This is coming as governments of the two countries have reached an agreement on the return of the looted fund.
The agreement was signed on Tuesday in the office of the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Mr. Abubakar Malami.
Malami signed on behalf of the Nigerian government while the U.S Ambassador to Nigeria, Mary Beth Leonard, signed on the behalf of the U.S government.
Malami said the fund, when returned, would be channelled to three ongoing projects by the Federal Government, including the ongoing Abuja-Kaduna road and the 2nd Niger Bridge.
Nigerian funds looted by Abacha in the 1990s have continued to find their ways back into the country several years after they were looted by the late general.
Among the loots to have been returned to Nigeria include the $723 million, which Switzerland returned to Nigeria in 2006.
The US and Jersey also in 2020 agreed to return over $308 million of Abacha’s loot to Nigeria.
