US Consulate Celebrates Nigeria-US Trade Growth, Highlights ABC’s Impact

The US Consulate in Lagos marked the remarkable growth in Nigeria-US bilateral trade, celebrating the American Business Council (ABC)’s efforts in fostering stronger business ties between the two nations.

US Consul-General, Will Stevens, made the announcement at a Thanksgiving event, revealing that trade volumes between the two countries had risen from $10 billion to $11.3 billion in just one year.

Stevens praised the contributions of US companies in Nigeria, emphasizing their commitment to both business and community development.

“Wherever US companies are invested, they are also invested in the people they work with and the communities where they operate,” he said.

The event also spotlighted the role of initiatives such as EducationUSA and American Spaces, which promote cultural exchange and educational opportunities for Nigerian students.

Reflecting on his tenure, Stevens expressed pride in the growth of Nigeria-US relations, from increased trade to significant diplomatic engagements.

“It’s been the honor of my life to serve in Nigeria,” he remarked, noting his anticipation for continuing his work in Washington.

Margaret Olele, CEO of the ABC, echoed Stevens’ sentiments, highlighting the Council’s role in representing over 91 US companies in Nigeria. She underscored the long-term commitment of these businesses, focusing on capacity building and social impact.

Olele also pointed to recent collaborations with USAID and a Silicon Valley start-up university to empower Nigerian youth through digital skills and cybersecurity hackathons.

The event underscored the deepening economic ties and shared commitment between Nigeria and the US, with an emphasis on sustainable development and investment in future generations.
