UNIBEN shuts down academic activities after student protests

The Senate of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) has suspended academic activities indefinitely following large-scale protests by students on Wednesday.

This decision was communicated in a statement by the institution’s Public Relations Officer, Benedicta Ehanire, on Thursday.

Immediate Hostel Evacuation Ordered
The university has ordered students to vacate their hostels immediately. However, the shutdown does not affect non-academic staff or those on essential duties.

“Following the refusal of students of the University of Benin to shift grounds on their demands for twenty-four hours supply of electricity and more, considered unrealistic by the University’s Senate, the University has shut down academic activities indefinitely,” the statement read. “Students are to vacate the hostels immediately while all the relevant units of the University are to take note and comply.”

Protests Over Power Outages
The protests erupted due to prolonged power outages on the UNIBEN campus, severely affecting students’ preparation for the upcoming first-semester examinations, which are only two weeks away. In a show of their frustration, students blocked the busy Benin-Ore Highway on Wednesday, bringing attention to their plight.

Demands for Continuous Power Supply
The students are demanding a 24-hour electricity supply to facilitate their academic activities. However, the university management has deemed this demand unrealistic, citing limitations in the institution’s capacity to provide uninterrupted power.

University’s Stance
The Senate’s decision to shut down academic activities is seen as a move to manage the unrest and reassess the situation. The institution’s leadership remains firm in its stance, urging students to be realistic in their demands while ensuring that non-academic operations continue smoothly.

The development marks a significant escalation in the ongoing struggle between UNIBEN students and the university administration over basic amenities and their impact on academic performance.
