The Taraba State government has warned that any traditional ruler who allows communal violence in their domain will be removed from office.

Deputy Governor Alhaji Aminu Abdullahi Alkali issued this warning during a peace meeting between the Fulani and Gommu communities in Karim-Lamido Local Government Area.

Speaking on behalf of Governor Agbu Kefas, Alkali condemned the recent communal clashes in the area, which led to the loss of several lives.

“The government will not tolerate killings and destruction of property in any community,” Alkali declared. “Traditional rulers must encourage peaceful coexistence among their subjects, and any traditional ruler found encouraging disharmony in his domain will be deposed.”

Ardo Njarenga Galdo, National Chairman of Tabbital Pulaaku, speaking for the Fulani community, blamed the crisis on youth from both sides.

He noted that the Fulani had coexisted peacefully with their neighbours for many years and would continue to caution their youths against inciting violence.

“We have lived peacefully with our neighbours, and we will continue to caution our youths against causing crises,” Galdo stated.

He also urged leaders of the Gommu community to similarly control their youth.

Mr Bitrus Bala Sarkin Yara, Chief of Bikwin Chiefdom, praised Governor Kefas for promoting peace among the state’s diverse communities.

“The traditional rulers in Karim-Lamido will continue to work for peace in line with the government’s commitment to ensuring peace in the state,” Sarkin Yara assured.

Governor Kefas was reportedly unhappy about the recent conflict and insisted that traditional rulers must play an active role in preventing such crises.
