President Bola Tinubu has directed the immediate evacuation of residents in Maiduguri communities affected by severe flooding.
Expressing deep concern over the situation in Borno State, Tinubu called on federal agencies to expedite rescue efforts and offer swift humanitarian assistance to those impacted by the disaster.
In a statement titled ‘President Tinubu Expresses Concern over Maiduguri Flood, Pledges Federal Support’ and signed by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, the president urged for swift action.
“While the relevant authorities are still assessing the damage caused by the flood, the President calls for the immediate evacuation of people from the affected areas,” the statement read.
Borno State is currently grappling with its worst flooding in decades, which has submerged homes and government facilities, including a post office, Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, a cemetery, and even a zoo, where wild animals were seen scrambling for safety.
Tinubu extended his condolences to the state’s government and residents, particularly those who have lost their homes and livelihoods due to the overflow of the Alau Dam.
“President Tinubu extends his heartfelt condolences to the government and people of the state, especially to the families that have lost their means of livelihood due to the disaster triggered by the overflow of the Alau Dam,” Onanuga stated.
The President assured Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum that the Federal Government is fully prepared to collaborate in addressing the humanitarian needs of the affected residents.
Tinubu has also instructed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide immediate assistance to flood victims.
In closing, Onanuga reaffirmed that President Tinubu remains committed to mobilising federal resources to support the state in these challenging times, pledging continuous efforts to mitigate the disaster’s impact.
